In the evening of 16 December 1980, an unannounced demonstration started all around the Gedächtniskirche. Among the demonstrators were squatters and their sympathizers. Already in advance it was recommended to appear well equipped for the demonstration. This turned out to be a wise advice, as the demonstration ended in riots, fights with the police, arrests, removal of injured people in the ambulance, and bashed car and shop windows.
